Conversion to Islam: HC asks JU to explain legality of issuing press release

JUThe High Court on Wednesday directed the Jahangirnagar University authorities to explain why they would not be directed to take action against a public relations officer for issuing a press release to the media after a JU employee with family members converted to Islam, recently.
The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain also asked the authorities to explain the legality of issuing the press release on April 25.
The bench passed the rule suo moto after taking into account a story ‘converted into Islam’ (Islam Dharmo Grahan) published in daily Janakantha on April 28.
The varsity’s vice chancellor, the syndicate, registrar, and director (public relations) were asked to respond the rule by May 15 when the court will take up the matter.
‘What was the problem of the public relations officer, if one converted into Islam?’ the court observed prior to passing of the order.
