A train tossed a bus off the road at Titipara level crossing near Kamalapur railway station leaving at least three people dead and around 20 injured on Tuesday night.
All three were passengers of the bus.
The collision reduced the bus to mangled wreckage.
Kamalapur railway station police officer-in-charge Abdul Majid told New Age that two people had died on the spot as the Dhaka-bound train from Narayanganj rammed the Balaka Paribahan bus around 9:00pm.
Police could not immediately give the identities of two of the deceased, both aged about 30.
The third victim, Nazmus-Sabah Naju, 25, died on her way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Naju, a student of Dinajpur Government College, was wife of AKM Obaidur Rahman, a sub-editor of the daily Janakantha.
Obaidur, who was sitting in the rear of the bus, was also injured in the accident.
Among the injured, train passenger Al-Amin, 22, was taken to DMCH before being shifted to NITOR as his left hand was cut off.
Railway police superintendent (Chittagong) Nazrul Islam said that the number of casualties could rise as many of the victims were taken to the nearby hospital.
New Age DMCH correspondent said that eight of the injured were undergoing treatment there.
The accident occurred as the Balaka Paribahan bus took the wrong side in a desperate bid to pass the level crossing even after seeing the train approach, the police said.
Obaidur said that the bars at the level crossing were not lowered on time which had led to the accident.
The injured included Shanu Begum, 32, Shah Alam, 38, Iqbal, 38, Dolly Akhtar, 24, Kala Bepari, 50, and Mahfuz, 35.
