Prof Mazharul Islam’s 11th death anniv today

The 11th death anniversary of eminent educationist and former vice- chancellor of Rajshahi University Mazharul Islam will be observed today.
He died at a Bangkok hospital on November 15 in 2003. He had also served as the first director general of Bangla Academy.
Prayer and destitute feeding will be held at Mazharul’s village Charbanipur under Shahjadpur in Sirajganj.
Besides, many institutions, that were established by Mazhaurl including Mazharul Islam Model College, Nurjahan Mazhar College and Sparrow Group, will remember Mazharul.
Mazharul Islam was born on July 1, 1929. He was a vice-chancellor of Rajshahi University, professor at Dhaka University and guest professor at Harvard, Calcutta, Chicago, Ranchi, Delhi and Bishwa Bharati Universities. Mazharul Islam obtained his PhD in Bangla literature in 1958 and another PhD in folklore studies from Indiana University, USA in 1963. He was also the president of Bangladesh-India Friendship Association.
Mazharul Islam was the first person to author a political biography of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
