The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in Dhaka on Sunday granted two-day remand for Mahmuda Khatun and Shariful Islam for being quizzed in connection with the killing of Islamic scholar Nurul Islam Faruqui.
Metropolitan magistrate Owayes Qurni passed the order while detective police inspector Julhas Uddin, also investigation officer, submitted a petition for seven-day remand.
The police on early Saturday detained three people, including the duo, from a location of Rupganj in Narayanganj. They also arrested one Md Yusuf, 30, in Chauddagram municipality area in Comilla on Friday night.
The police suspected that Mahmuda visited Faruqui’s family about an hour before the murder. She had introduced herself as Asma.
Assailants killed Faruqui, 50, by slitting his throat inside his apartment in the capital’s East Rajabazar on August 27.
Faruqui, also the Supreme Court mosque Khatib, was a popular anchor of two Islamic TV programmes, Kafela and Shantir Path, aired by private television channel, Channel-i.
Faisal Faruqui, son of the Islamic scholar, filed a murder case on August 28 with Sher-e-Bangla nagar police station against eight to nine unnamed people.
The case was then transferred to detective branch on Saturday night.
