Rana Plaza collapse: Mourners build temporary memorial

Mourners, including colleagues and relatives of the workers killed, maimed and missing in the Rana Plaza collapse, set up a memorial at the site of the disaster to pay homage to the dead.
Locals, including teachers and students of educational institutions, joined the workers in erected the temporary four- feet high memorial on Thursday morning and placed wreaths there.
They demanded construction of a permanent memorial at the site.
Rana Plaza came crashing down on the morning of April 24 killing over 1,100 people, mostly garment workers, and maiming over 2,000. The eight-storey building had housed five clothing factories, a shopping mall and a bank.
The owners of Rana Plaza and the five garment units had forced the workers to join work on that day even after dangerous cracks were detected on the building.
A few days ago, the survivors, families of the workers who died in the Rana Plaza collapse and labour leaders called upon the government to set up a memorial at the site to commemorate the tragedy.
Several hundred people under the banners of Garment Workers Trade Union Kendra, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Gosti, Rana Plaza Workers Union, Mahila Parishad, Savar Nagarik Committee, Social development Society, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Khelaghar Ashar, Mukta Tarunya and Kabi Jasim Uddin Parishad placed wreaths at the temporary memorial on Friday.
The organisations placed a six-point demand, including rehabilitation and proper treatment of the injured workers, immediate payment of compensation to the families of the victims, proper listing of the injured and missing workers, punishment of Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana and owners of the five factories and compensation of Tk 50 lakh for each victim and Tk 30 lakh for each injured worker.
Communist Party of Bangladesh leader Ahsan Habib Lavlu said garment factory owners must ensure workplace safety to prevent such tragedies in future.
Garment Workers Trade Union Kendra leader Tuhin Khan said the land of Rana Plaza must be used for rehabilitation of the victims.
Nagorik Committee leaders Sagiruzzaman and Rafiqul Islam Molla, Kabi Jasim Uddin Parishad’s Atahar Ali and CPB leader Azam Babu also spoke at the gathering.
