100 vehicles vandalised during Sylhet hartal

More than 100 vehicles were vandalised in the Sylhet city and three pickets were detained during during a dawn-to-dusk general strike in the district on Thursday.
The general strike was, however, peaceful at the upazila headquarters in the district, sources in the police said.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed Ilias Mukti Sangram Parishad and Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal enforced the general strike pressing for immediate disclosure of the whereabouts of the disappeared BNP organising secretary M Ilias Ali.
Witnesses said that pickets took position at the main key points, including Mirabazar, Dopadighirpar, Ambarkhana, Chowhatta, Zindabazar, Lamabazar, Taltala, Shibganj, Kumargaon, Sobhanighat, Upa-Shahar, Medical College Road, Subidbazar, Akhalia, Kadamtali, Bhartakhola, Humayun Rashid Square and Chandirpul in the city from the early morning amid rain.
They vandalised a truck, about 40 CNG-run auto-rickshaws and battery-run three-wheelers at places between 7:30am and noon.
A group of some 50 activists of Swechchhasebak Dal and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on about 25 motorcycles brought out a procession from Mirabazar in the morning and marched through main city roads till noon when they also vandalised a least 60 more auto-rickshaws and battery-run three wheelers at places.
The pickets also brought out processions from places in the city.
They rallied at court point at about 2:00pm, where the leaders blamed the government for disappearance M Ilias Ali, also Sylhet district BNP president, and asked the government give him back to his family without any further delay.
They also threatened that they would launch a tough agitation movement from Sylhet to force the government to find out Ilias Ali and that would be turned in the movement of ousting it if the government did not meet the demand.
Swechchhasebak Dal vice-president Shamsuzzaman chaired the rally, which was addressed, among others, by BNP Sunamganj district unit secretary Kalim Uddin Milon, Sylhet city Swechchhasebak Dal general secretary Farhad Chowdhury Shamim and Chhatra Dal vice-president Abdul ahad Khan Jamal.
Almost all the shops, market places, shopping centres and other business establishments in the city were closed during the daylong shutdown.
