9 held as 6 cops hurt in Jamaat-Shibir attack in Magura

At least 17 people, including six policemen, were injured in an attack by activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir at Sanra village in Shalikha upazila of Magura on Thursday night.
Among the injured, Iqbal Hossain was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, while the others were admitted to sadar hospital.
Police nabbed nine people and seized a laptop, some mobile phone sets, jihadi books and leaflets, police said.
Jahidul Kabir, superintendent of police of Magura, said acting on secret information that Jamaat-Shibir men were holding a meeting for subversive activities, a patrol team of police led by sub-inspector Iqbal Hossain raided Sanra mosque in the area at about 11 am.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the Jamat-Shibir men called out the villagers terming the law enforcers ‘dacoits’.
The Jamaat-Shibir men, along with the villagers attacked them with sharp weapons and hurled brickbats, leaving sub-inspectors Iqbal and Ashraful, constables Salam, Rob, Monir and Idris injured.
Police fired six to seven rounds of shots to control the situation, leaving nine persons injured including Shibir’s district unit president Faruk Hossain, and activists Nazim Uddin and Ilias Ali.
A case was filed with Shalikha Police Station in this connection.
