A leader of a pirate gang was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between his team and the police at Char Kalam in Hatiya upazila in Noakhali early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Yunus Dakat. He was wanted in various cases, including of kidnapping and extortion.
The police said a police team launched an operation in a hideout of a pirate gang.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the pirates opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back that triggering a gunfight.
When the pirates fled the scene police recovered the body of Yunus from the spot. Five cops were also injured during the exchange of fire.
A cut-rifle and 12 rounds of bullet were recovered from the scene.
Meanwhile, police conducted a separate drive at village Aladi from where they arrested Yunus’s wife Asma Begum and another associate Salahuddin.
Police Super Anisur Rahman said Yunus and his gang had been involved in extortion and kidnapping of fishermen in the Bay and River Meghna for long.
