The airport customs seized 155 gold bars weighing about 18kg at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Friday morning.
The authority also arrested Salam Fakir, driver of an inbound-passenger bus in the airport area for his suspected involvement in the smuggling of the gold bars.
This is the second biggest haul of gold bars after July 24 when 1,065 gold bars weighing 124kg were seized from the Dhaka airport.
Airport customs assistant commissioner Ayesha Akter told New Age that the authorities had seized the gold bars from the bus about 9:30am and arrested the driver.
She said that the bars were carried by a United Airways flight which landed at the airport from Mascot at 9:07am. Before landing at Mascot, it took off from Dubai international airport.
The gold bars were found in a bag kept beside the bus driver, additional customs commissioner Mohidul Islam said.
The customs authorities, however, could not identify the person who was carrying the bars. ‘We are yet to establish whether any passenger or Biman employees are involved,’ Ayesha said.
No case was filed till 4:45pm.
