The 24-hour transport strike, enforced by Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation, in the country’s northern region was called off on Thursday morning.
The BRTWF called the shutdown demanding the release of opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s special assistant Shimul Biswas, also joint secretary of BRTWF and general secretary of Pabna Motor Workers’ Union.
Firoz Khan, president of Pabna Motor Workers’ Union and vice-president of North Bengal Workers’ Federation, announced the withdrawal of the transport strike in the morning, saying the government assured them of releasing Shimul.
All the 16 districts under Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions were under the purview of the strike which was supposed to end at 6:00pm on Thursday.
Police arrested top five BNP leaders, including Shimul, in the capital on November 8.
