ACC says it would scan candidates’ wealth statements

The Anti-Corruption Commission said Monday it would scan the wealth statements of MP candidates for the January 5 poll from this week.
ACC collected the wealth statements of at least 100 candidates published in newspapers, deputy director Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told New Age.
He said he made a file of newspaper clippings in this regard and that he would submit it to ACC seeking approval for inquiry in a day or two.
Last week ACC chairman M Badiuzzman said that he would probe into the phenomenal swelling wealth of ministers and MPs in last five years as the wealth statements they submitted to the Election Commission show.
A report of the Citizens for Good Governance showed ruling party men’s swelled by up to 32,985 per cent in last five years.
The earnings of 48 important candidates increased by 582 per cent on an average while their wealth swelled by an average of 363 per cent, it sid.
Of the 48 important candidates, the income of whip Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury rose by 32,985 per cent, showed the report.
The earnings of prime minister Sheikh Hasina increased by 136 per cent and her wealth by 46 per cent, the report said.
Housing minister Abdul Mannan Khan assets swelled to Tk 11 crore from Tk 10 lakh in 2008, showed the statement he submitted to the EC.
Environment minister Hasan Mahmud’s wife’s annual earnings jumped to Tk two crore in 2013 from Tk 19 lakh in 2008, show his statement.
Former LGRD state minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak reported to the EC that the value of his assets jumped to Tk 8.25 crore from Tk one crore five years ago.
