The Election Commission is going to hold the polls to Comilla 8 constituency, which had a single candidate, as the EC following a High Court order on Monday allowed an independent candidate to contest the 10th parliamentary polls.
Following a writ petition by the independent candidate, ASM Kamrul Islam, the High Court on December 26 asked the EC to allocate him the election symbol for January 5 polls and accordingly the EC on Monday asked the Comilla returning officer to take necessary measures to hold the polls to the constituency.
Jatiya Party’s Nurul Islam Milon was already declared elected unopposed for the constituency.
With this, the number of constituencies where the January 5 polls will take place has reached 146 and the number of candidates elected unopposed stood at 153 instead of 154.
Earlier on Sunday, the EC allowed two more candidates to contest the January 5 parliamentary polls following High Court orders.
The commission’s decision to allow the total three candidates to contest the polls took the number of contestants in the 10th parliamentary polls to 543 including 153 declared elected unopposed.
‘Following the High Court order, we have decided to allow them to contest the polls,’ election commissioner Shah Nawaz told New Age.
