Jatiya Party faction led by Kazi Zafar Ahmed on Monday feared that the country might face a civil war if the January 5 election was not postponed and a fresh schedule not announced.
The party also condemned the arrest of its 15 leaders and activists and demanded their immediate release.
In an emergency meeting, the party decided to postpone its presidium meeting scheduled for Monday afternoon at Gulshan due to volatile political situation.
JP faction chief Kazi Zafar told the meeting that the Awami League government had unleashed a reign of terror across the country. He demanded immediate resignation of prime minister Sheikh Hasina and announcement of a fresh schedule for an inclusive election.
’Fifteen of our leaders and activists were picked up from the press club area on Sunday while they were preparing to join the march for democracy programme announced by BNP chief Khaleda Zia. Today’s meeting has been postponed to avoid arrest of more activists,’ said Golam Moshih, the newly elected secretary general of the faction led by Kazi Zafar.
‘A fresh date for the presidium meeting will be announced soon,’ he said.
