RESULTS: BNP 32, AL 28, Jamaat 7

Candidates, backed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance, have maintained the lead in the second phase of the staggered upazila elections held on Thursday.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed chairman candidates won the polls at 32 upazilas, ruling Awami League-backed chairman candidates at 28 upazilas and Jamaat-e-Islami-supported candidates at seven upazilas, Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti at three, HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party and United People’s Democratic Front got one each as unofficial results of polls to 75 upazila councils reached New Age till 1:00am on Friday.
According to the reports from outlaying districts, AL-backed candidates won elections to Hatibandha and Patgram upazilas in Lalmonirhat; Charfession and Borhanuddin in Bhola; Boalmari in Faridpur; Parshuram in Feni; Chowgachha in Jessore; Purbadhala and Khaliajhuri in Netrakona; Kalai in Jaipurhat; Matlab (South) in Chandpur; Birganj and Birampur in Dinajpur; Kabirhat, Chatkhil and Companyganj in Noakhali; Shibchar and Rajoir in Madaripur; Bhaluka in Mymensingh; Kachua in Bagerhat; Mirpur, Khoksha and Kumarkhali in Kushtia; Badarganj in Rangpur; Sharsha in Jessore; Chunarughat in Habiganj; Munshiganj sadar and Kotalipara in Gopalganj.
BNP-backed candidates won elections to Lalmonirhat sadar; Shaltha and Nagarkanda in Faridpur; Pekua in Cox’s Bazar; Dumuria in Khulna; Bagharpara and Jhikargachha in Jessore; Adamdighi and Shajahanpur in Bogra; Lama in Bandarban; Chatmohar in Pabna; Barhatta in Netrakona; Harirampur in Manikganj; Sunamganj sadar and Jhirai in Sunamganj; Kaptai in Rangamati; Tentulia in Panchagar; Ranishoinkal in Thakurgaon; Ghoraghat in Dinajpur; Jaipurhat sadar and Khetlal in Jaipurhat; Savar in Dhaka; Gomosthapur in Chapainawabganj; Shalikha and Mohammadpur in Magura; Lalpur, Gurudashpur and Baghatipari in Natore; Monohorganj and Debidwar in Comilla; Balaganj in Sylhet and Patia in Chittagong.
Jamaat-e-Islami-backed candidates won elections to Moheshpur upazila in Jhenaidah; Bagha in Rajshahi; Shibganj and Kahalu in Bogra; Lohagara in Chittagong, Shyamnagar in Satkhira and Palashbari in Gaibandha.
Ershad-led Jatiya Party-backed chairman candidate won election to Kishoreganj upazila in Nilphamari.
Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti-backed chairman candidates won the elections to Ruma and Roangchhari in Bandarban and Naniarchar in Rangamati while United Peoples’ Democratic Front-backed candidate won election to Lakkhichhari upazila in Khagrachari.
Two independent chairman candidates won the elections to Thanchi upazila in Bandarban and Shibpur in Narsingdi.
One hundred and fifteen upazilas in 52 districts went to polls in the second phase of the staggered upazila council elections. Five hundred candidates contested for chairmanship, 506 for vice-chairmanship and 334 for vice-chairmanship reserved for women in the second phase.
The Election Commission has suspended elections to Noakhali sadar upazila amid widespread violence. It also suspended polls results of Laksham upazila in Comilla following suspension of polling in two stations.
In the first phase elections to 98 upazila councils held on February 19, BNP got 44 posts of chairman, AL got 34 and Jamaat got 12.
