Daserkandi sewage treatment plant: Construction delay irks ministry

A government committee on Thursday expressed disappointment at the delay in the construction of the proposed Daserkandi Sewage Treatment Plant as the delay hampers the Hatirjheel-Begunbari project, officials said.
Housing minister Mosharraf Hossain at a review meeting on the Hatirjheel-Begunbari project on Thursday wanted speedy measures for the construction of the treatment plant.
He told the officials of different ministries and divisions that it was not a project of Dhaka WASA. ‘It is an important project of the country,’ he said.
The construction of Daserkandi Sewage Treatment Plant was supposed to begin in 2008 in order to clean water of Begunbari and Hatirjheel lakes. But the treatment plant project is still a paperwork that causes severe pollution of water in both the lakes.
The untreated sewer of the project falls into the Balu River.
Of the lakes, the cost for developing the Hatirjheel-Begunbari as an attractive recreation place was Tk 1,971 crore.
Hatirjheel project director (WASA part) Shahiduddin told New Age that they had prepared the DPP of the project worth of Tk 425 crore.
The ‘Sewage Treatment Plant at Daserkandi for Treating Diverted Sewage from Hatirjheel-Begunbari Khal Project’ would treat 5 lakh cubic metres of wastes per day, he said.
Earlier, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology professor Mujibur Rahman, who is a consultant of Hatirjheel project, blamed the authorities concerned for delaying the construction and completion of the plant.
He said BUET has already finalised the design of lifting station and sewage treatment plant.
Housing secretary Md Golam Rabbani, local government and rural development additional secretary Juaina Aziz and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha chairman Md Nurul Huda were present at the review meeting.
The meeting decided to ask the home ministry to set up a separate police station for the safety of the project area.
A number of government agencies like Rajuk, 16 Engineering Construction Battalion of Bangladesh Army, DWASA and Local Government Engineering Department are jointly implementing the Begunbari-Hatirjheel project.
