BR to buy coaches, no more DEMU railcars

Bangladesh Railway has dropped the idea of buying 10 DEMU rail cars from India and would instead like to procure 120 train coaches, said officials.
The idea of buying the Diesel Electric Multiple Unit trains, better known as DEMU rail cars has proved less satisfactory in the wake of BR’s recent experience with 20 DEMU rail cars imported from China, they said.
BR expects to submit its new procurement plan to the Planning Commission for approval, said officials.
The railways ministry secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad recently told New Age that it would be better to buy the coaches than the DEMU trains.
‘We have already prepared a detailed project plan for submission to the Planning Commission for approval,’ he said.
BR additional director general Mohammad Khaliur Rahman said that the projects for buying 10 DEMU Rail cars and 70 air-conditioned coaches from India was cancelled on October 22, 2013. The country does not need 70 AC coaches, he said.
The current plan, he said, is to buy 120 coaches from India, 34 of them broad gauge AC coaches and 86 broad gauge non-AC coaches.
BR would like to press seven-sets of the trains on the existing routes and provide four AC coaches in each train, he said.
