Man killed in Jessore ‘gunfight’

A 40-year-old man was killed in an alleged ‘gunfight’ between two groups of ‘miscreants’ at Mathurapur on Jessore–Jhenidah road, around 2:00am on Thursday.
The officer-in-charge of Jessore Kotwali police, Ilias Hossain, said that after they were tipped about the ensuing ‘gunfight’, they rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Later, police found a severely injured man on the scene. They took him to Jessore General Hospital where the attending doctors declared him dead, he said.
Ilias Hossain said they were trying to ascertain the identity of the man.
Earlier on August 20, Azim Biswas of Khulna and Habib Gazi of Jessore were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ in Jessore, police said.
On July 29, a man was killed in a tripartite ‘gunfights’ between two groups of drug peddlers and police, in a date orchard in Jessore, police claimed.
Nesar Uddin of Bezpara in Jessore town was killed in a similar incident on July 19.
On July 2, Faruk Hossain in Jessore town was killed in an alleged ‘gunfight’. But Taslima Begum, wife of the victim, told newsmen that her husband was a farmer and was abducted by four men identifying them as police on July 1.
