Ex-Coast Guard DG Shafiq, army corporal arrested

The Anti-Corruption Commission arrested former Bangladesh Coast Guard director general Shafiq-ur-Rahman and suspended Bangladesh Army corporal Abul Kalam on Thursday.
A team of the commission team led by its director Enamul Basir arrested retired commodore Shafiq-ur-Rahman, also a member on Bangladesh Nationalist Party national executive committee, at his house in Dhaka on early Thursday in a case filed on charge of selling wheat at lower price in 1997-98 financial year causing a loss of Tk 7.37 crore to the state exchequer.
The case was filed against Shafiq in 1998 with the now defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption, commission secretary Abu M Mustafa Kamal told reporters.
He said that the commission was also trying to arrest four more accused in the case.
New Age court correspondent reported that Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Emdadul Haque remanded Shafiq in Jail as the commission officials produced him before the court.
Commission’s assistant director Nazim Uddin on Thursday morning arrested Abul Kalam in Dhaka on charge of embezzlement of Tk 2.31 lakh showing forged bills in May-June 2005.
He was suspended from the Bangladesh Army and a case was filed against him in November 2015.
