Ten-man Abahani Limited came from behind to hold defending champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club to a 3-3 draw in an entertaining Bangladesh Premier League match in Sylhet on Thursday.
With the draw, Jamal remained on the top of the points table with 19 points from nine matches while four-time league champions, Abahani have 17 points from the same number of outings.
Last season’s runners-up, Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra tasted their maiden win of the league when they defeated Mohammedan Sporting Club 1-0 in the second match of the day at the same venue, Sylhet District Stadium.
The game began with frantic pace as both the sides could take an early lead within the first five minutes of the match but the failure of the forwards kept the deadlock till the 42nd minute.
Jamal’s Haitian forward Wedson Anselme volleyed home to make it 1-0 in the 42nd minute after Abahani defender Tapu Barman headed a Landing Darboe cross to unmarked Wedson.
The lead lasted only for four minutes after a poor clearance from Sheikh Jamal goalkeeper Maksudur Rahman Mustaq.
Midfielder Fahad volleyed a Mustaq clearance on Emon Babu corner
into the net in the first
minute of the six-minute added time of the first half while English midfielder Lee Tuck put Abahani ahead in the deep of the stoppage time with a tap in just after squandering a penalty kick one minute before.
Abahani began the second half brilliantly
but Fahad put them in deep trouble when the midfielder received his second yellow card of the match after being involved in an unnecessary argument with Jamal midfielder Enamul Haque Sharif and pushed him.
Referee Azad Rahman did not hesitate to sent-off the midfielder in the 49th minute.
Despite reduced to 10-man, Abahani extended their lead to 3-1 with Sunday Chizoba striking his fifth goal of the league in the 50th minute but the Sky Blues were not capable of protecting the lead with some sloppy defending.
Availing a header from Emeka Darlington, unmarked Landing reduced the margin to 3-2
in the 56th minute while Wedson dribbled past defender Mamun Mia from the right to equalise the margin with an angular placing shot in the 76th minute.
In the other match of the day, Cameroonian forward Paul Emile struck in the 51st minute to give Russell their first win after they suffered six defeats from their first seven matches of the campaign.
With the win, Russell moved to the 11th place of the points table with five points from nine games while the Black and White outfits were just one place up in 10th place with six points from the same number of matches.
