Police could not arrest the man who is accused of throwing acid at his ex wife and mother-in-law, three days into filing a case, on Monday.
Both the victims are now taking treatments at Chittagong Medical College and Hospital’s burn unit and were in stable conditions.
The accused was Jane Alam alias Jahangir, son of Mozaffar Hossain of Mithapukur in Rangpur, police said.
The victims, Sheli Akter, former wife of Jahangir, and her mother Hosne Ara, live at Polo-ground area and run a tea stall.
Sheli’s mother Hosne Ara said her daughter divorced Jahangir around a year ago because he was a ‘drug-addict’ and used to torture her daughter.
After the divorce, Jahangir often stalked Sheli and wanted to re-marry her but she declined. Vindictive, he launched the acid attack when both of them were sleeping, Hosne Ara said.
Hosne Ara sustained burn injury on her hand and chest and that Sheli’s face, throat and part of chest were burned, police said.
The officer-in-charge of Kotwali police, Jashim Uddin, said that Jahangir fled after the attack. However, police seized the auto-rickshaw he used to drive from near the residence of Sheli.
‘We are trying to arrest the man,’ said Jashim.
