4,671 people killed in launch capsize in 40 years

A total of 4671 people were killed and another 466 went missing in launch capsizes in the last 40 years, shipping minister Shajahan Khan informed the parliament on Wednesday.
A total of 510 people were injured in 595 launch capsize incidents till August this year from 1976, the minister disclosed while answering a question of lawmaker MA Awal.
The highest 464 people were killed in 31 capsizes in 2003 and lowest 22 people were killed in 2013 in 10 launch capsize incidents.
This year 22 people were killed in six launches capsize incidents till August.
While replaying another question, Shahjahan Khan said that there was no launch without fitness certificate. ‘BITWA provides route permission and time table on the condition of having fitness certificate, so there is no scope of operation of launches without fitness certificates,’ he said.
