A bill titled ‘Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development Bill, 2016’ was placed in parliament on Wednesday for updating the existing ordinance rules to smoothly run the organisation.
LGRD minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain placed the bill in the House and it was sent to the respective parliamentary standing committee for further scrutiny.
The committee was asked to submit its report within 30 days.
The activities of the BARD, which is situated in Comilla, were governed under the Rural Academy Ordinance – 1986 which was annulled by the higher court.
As per the earlier decision, the cabinet brought the bill to maintain the continuity of BARD drafting it in Bangla as well as making it more time-befitting.
Under the proposed law, BARD will be a statutory body and its activities will be governed by an 18- member board headed by the LGRD minister.
The state minister or the deputy minister will be the head of the board in the absence of the minister.
