Three Dhaka-based theatre troupes will stage their productions highlighting values and morality on the sixth day of the National Theatre Festival 2016 today.
Theatre Art Unit will stage Na Manush Jamin at the National Theatre Hall while Swapnadal will stage Chitrangada at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Shushamo Natya Sampradaya will stage Mrigotrishna at the Dr Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Bangladesh Mahila Samity.
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation have jointly organised the 18-day festival that will feature a total of 58 theatre productions by the same number of troupes from across the country.
Na Manush Jamin, written and directed by Saif Suman, takes a critical look at the concept of borders between countries through the sufferings of a trafficked family, stranded at a no-man’s zone between the borders of India and Bangladesh.
As the family suffers from cold and non-cooperation of the BGB and BSF, the woman gives birth to a baby. The play raises the question of the nationality of the child born in the no-man’s land between borders.
Swapnadal will stage the lyrical drama Chitrangada written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1892. It highlights the inner beauty of soul as opposed to one’s physical beauty through a story of the affair between the legendary Arjun and the Manipuri princess Chitrangada, as narrated in the epic Mahabharata.
The audience is more familiar with the dance drama version of Tagore’s Chitrangada, which he composed almost 44 years after writing the lyrical drama after he became fascinated with the classical Manipuri dance.
The production has been directed by Zahid Repon.
Shushamo Natya Sampradaya’s production Mrigotrishna, written and directed by Khandokar Anwarul Islam, is a social satire that shows how people get involved with different professions in their life including criminal activities that ultimately lead to destruction of social values.
