Girl killed in roof collapse in city

A young girl was killed in sleep and her mother injured as the roof of their tin-shed building and a part of wall of an adjacent abandoned government building collapsed on them in the capital’s Shah Ali area early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Kulshum Akhter Nishi, 16, daughter of Harunur Rashid of village Tikkapara of Sherpur. Her mother, Anwara Begum, 42, was administered first aid at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The victim’s brother, Ismail Hossain, told New Age that they have been living at the residence on rent for seven to eight years and her younger sister was a grade IX student of Satata Model School in Mirpur in Dhaka.
Shah Ali police station assistant sub-inspector Shamshul Huq said big chunks of concrete of the adjacent abandoned building of Ashrayan Prakalpa, a government project, fell on the victim’s tin-shed roof as the run-down building’s first floor wall collapsed around 2:30am.
He said the family members took the victim to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors pronounced her dead.
