An alleged ringleader of ‘Khokan Bahini’, Farid alias Khokan, was killed early Monday in an alleged ‘gunfight’ with police at Bakerganj.
Khokan, 35, son of Zabed Ali of Maheshpur under Bakerganj upazila was arrested from a hideout on Sunday morning, said Harun-or-Rashid, acting officer-in-charge and investigation inspector of Bakerganj police.
Based on a primary interrogation, a police team led by circle assistant super of police, Sahabuddin Kabir, began a drive early Monday to recover fire arms that Khokan’s gang were allegedly possessing.
As police reached near the Pourasava Govt. Primary School under ward number 7 of the municipal area around 1:00am, associates of Khokan opened gunshots on police and tried to snatch him away from the law enforcers’ custody. Police then reacted, prompting a gunfight.
Harun said as Khokan attempted to flee, he came along the line of fire and was wounded.
He was brought to Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex where doctors on duty declared him dead, police said.
A shutter gun, a pipe gun, two sharp weapons and nine cartridges were recovered from the scene, according to Harun.
Bakerganj police claimed that Khokan was wanted in sixteen criminal cases, including robberies, explosions and a homicide.
