Cultural organisation Jagruti Lalitakala Kendra celebrated its seventh founding anniversary through a programme at the Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Thursday.
The event featured discussion as well as a dance drama staged by the members of the centre.
Titled ‘Amar Swadesh, Amar Bhalobasa,’ the drama has been directed by noted dancer Amanul Haque Aman and depicts major events in the history of the land including the 1952 language movement and the 1971 war of independence.
In the tumultuous days before the war, a love affair of a young man and woman blossoms but is threatened by the man’s decision to join the war after it breaks out, separating the two. He gets injured on the ground and is crippled, while she is raped by the Pakistani army and their local collaborators.
However, the two reunite when the war ends.
The dancers presented the story through their movements synchronised with patriotic songs such as Purba Digante Surjo Uthechhe, Janatar Sangram Cholbei, and Mora Ekti Phulke Bachabo Bole.
Earlier, at the discussion session, cultural personality Kamal Lohani delivered a speech as chief guest.
Sohrab Uddin, director of music and dance at the academy, and eminent dancer Amanul Haque Aman were also present on the occasion. Jagruti Lalitakala Kendra president Raka Siddique presided over the session.
