Eminent artist Murtaja Baseer on Saturday was honoured with an award named after his late friend-artist Hamidur Rahman.
He received the Hamidur Rahman Puraskar at an awards ceremony at the Chhayanaut auditorium in Dhanmondi.
The award was introduced in 2007 under the supervision of Bengal Foundation.
Hamidur’s sister-in law Parvin Ahmed handed over the award in the presence of popular artists Rafiqun Nabi and Mahmudul Haque, Bengal Foundation chairman Abul Khair and director general Luva Nahid Chowdhury.
Speakers at the programme talked about Hamidur Rahman, Murtaja Baseer and their contributions to contemporary arts.
They said Murtaja Baseer is not only a gifted artist but also a language movement veteran. Since 1950s, Murtaja has been practicing arts in diverse mediums.
His superior drawing skills and colour sense have taken him to a different height, they said.
A documentary on Murtaja Baseer titled ‘Murtaja Baseer: Shilpa Anweshar 55 Bachhar’ was also screened at the programme.
The documentary features Mutaja’s life starting from his school days, his participation in the language movement in 1952, his enrolment at the then Dacca Art College (now faculty of fine arts of Dhaka University).
It also depicts his dedication for art and fascination with literature.
