Inequality is widening

Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in various economic parameters over the past few years. It has shown an outstanding performance in GDP growth, per capita income and many other indicators.
It has maintained the GDP growth above 6 per cent for six consecutive years and it is about to touch, as very recent indicators show, 7 per cent, which is unmatched in South-east Asia. Our per capita income has also increased, now hovering around $1,500. Amidst global recession, the Bangladesh economy has been resilient.
It is heartening to see that our GDP and per capita income are in a good pace. But inequality is widening. The gap between the rich and the poor are features which should be checked for a balanced growth.
