Prime minister Sheikh Hasina said in parliament on Wednesday that a total of 233 foreign Non-Government Organisations are carrying out their activities in Bangladesh.
Nearly 342 foreigners and 15,815 Bangladeshis are working in these foreign NGOs as employees and officials, Hasina said.
Replying to a question from Jatiya Party lawmaker AKM Maidul Islam [Kurigram-3], the prime minister in her scripted answer tabled in the House said that the foreign officials of the NGOs are required to take approval of NGO Affairs Bureau and the home ministry.
She said that foreign citizens who perform their duties voluntarily do not receive salaries and allowances.
In some cases, foreigners receive salary from the country where the head office of the NGO is situated. They also take salaries and allowances in Bangladeshi currency if there is financial allocation in the ongoing project, she said.
