The Appellate Division of Supreme Court on Thursday granted interim bail to Rafiur Rabbi, a cultural activist in Narayanganj and also the father of slain Tanvir Muhammad Twaki till January 5, 2017 incheque fraud case.
Appellate Division chamber Judge Justice Mirza Husain Haider issued the bail after hearing a bail petition filed by Rafiur Rabbi.
Rafiur also challenged the High Court verdict that on February 15 upheld his one year imprisonment in the case.
Earlier on Tuesday, Narayanganj additional district and session’s judge court-1 sent Rafiur to jail after he surrendered to the court.
Rafiur’s lawyer KhurshidAlam Khan told reporters that now there will be no bar to release his client as he was not wanted in any other case.
Earlier on June 24, 2015, the Narayanganj additional district and session’s judge court had sentenced Rabbi to one year imprisonment and ordered to pay Tk 2.10 crore as fine in the case.
The court had ordered Rabbi to pay Tk 1.40 crore to the plaintiff, Jalal Uddin, and deposit Tk 70 lakh to the Treasury.
Later Rafiur Rabbi appealed against the lower court verdict but the High Court upheld the punishment and asked him to surrender before the trial court.
According to the case statement, Rabbi gave Tk 70 lakh by two cheques to Jalal Uddin, a businessman and also a relative of local lawmaker Shamim Osman, over a land related issue on February 8 and 15, 2012.
The cheques were dishonoured later and Jalal lodged a case in this connection on April 25 of the same year.
