Fakhrul released after five hours of landing in jail

The newly appointed Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was sent to jail in about two hours of his appointment and was released from jail in about next five hours on Wednesday.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate M Golam Nabi ordered him to jail when he surrendered before the court seeking bail about two hours after he was named as the party secretary general.
The court passed the order rejecting his petitions for bail in two cases while granting him bail in another case.
Fakhrul was taken to jail at about 1.30pm.
The same court, however, granted interim bail to Fakhrul till submission of charge sheets in the two cases at about 4.30pm after hearing a petition moved by his defence counsel Sanaullah Miah to reconsider the earlier decision on health grounds.
The party on Wednesday named Fakhrul as its secretary general after 10 days of its 6th national council session held on March 19. The party also named Ruhul Kabir Rizvi as senior joint secretary general and Mizanur Rahman Sinha as treasurer.
Released from Dhaka central jail at about 6.45pm, Fakhrul briefly addressed leaders and activists in front of the jail gate saying that the movement for democracy would continue.
After being appointed the BNP secretary general, Fakhrul appeared before the court seeking bail in the three cases filed with Paltan police station on charges of vandalism, arson and attempt to murder during the anti-government movement.
As the news of sending Fakhrul to jail spread, leaders and activists took to street in front of the BNP central office at Nayapaltan.
Newly appointed senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said at a briefing that sending Fakhrul to jail soon after his appointment as secretary general exposed the government’s naked conspiracy.
Earlier, at about 11:30am, Rizvi at a briefing at the party’s central office announced the names of three vital office-bearers of the new national executive committee of BNP appointed by the party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Earlier Khaleda and her eldest son Tarique Rahman were re-elected uncontested as chairperson and senior vice-chairman respectively.
Fakhrul had been carrying out as acting secretary general since March 2011 few days after the death of the party secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain on March 16, 2011.
Rizvi had been serving as joint secretary general in the outgoing executive committee.
Mizanur Rahman Sinha retained the post of treasurer.
