Murder accused killed in ‘gunfight’ with police in Jhenaidah

A murder accused was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Jhenaidah and a suspected robber sustained bullet injuries in another ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion in the capital early on Tuesday.
New Age Jhenaidah correspondent reported that murder accused Chantu Mia, 22, son of Rowshan Ali of Lalpur, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Moheshpur in Jhenaidah early on Tuesday.
He was accused in a case of killing one Akimul of village Samanta, the police said.
The body of Akimul was recovered on February 17.
Moheshpur police officer-in-charge Aminul Islam Biplab said they had arrested Chantu at Kushtia on Monday.
According to his statement, the police launched a drive to recover arms and ammunition early on Tuesday.
Around 3:30am when they approached Balidapara area, the associates of Chantu opened fire on the law enforcers prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
The miscreants fired around 20 bullets while the policemen fired 30 bullets.
At one stage of the gunfight, his cohorts retreated from the spot and bullet-hit Chnatu was found dead there.
Two police constables, Masud Rana and Ahsan Habib, also sustained bullet injuries, the OC claimed.
They were taken to Khulna Police Hospital.
The police recovered a pipe gun, six bullets, and a machete from the spot.
The body of Chantu was sent to Jhenaidah General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
In the capital’s Narinda, a suspected robber, Mohammad Rubel, son of Shahjahan Howladar of Bakerganj in Barisal, sustained bullet injuries in a ‘gunfight’ with the members of RAB early on Tuesday.
The battalion members also held six people, including the injured one, for their suspected involvement in robbery.
RAB in a press release said that acting on an information that a robbers gang was planning to carry out robbery at Shaheb Lane in Narinda area, a RAB-2 team raided the area at about 2:00am on Tuesday.
Sensing the presence of RAB, the robbers opened fire on the battalion members, prompting them to retaliate with firing that triggered a gunfight.
Rubel fell in line of the fire. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was now out of danger, RAB said.
RAB detained five others from the spot.
They are: Mohammad Alam of Comilla, Mosto Munshi of Madaripur, Wajed Howladar of Madaripur, Kowsar of Narsingdi and Mohammad Anik of Barisal.
