One more suspect in the killing of four children at Bahubal upazila in Habiganj was arrested on Saturday.
Bahubal police officer-in-charge Mosharraf Hossain said that local people confined Shahed Ahmad, 24, younger brother of detained accused Basir Uddin, of Subdratiki village on Saturday morning for his dubious statements and then handed him over to police.
‘Shahed was handed over to the Detective Branch of police for interrogation,’ he said.
The victims — Zakaria Ahmed Shubha, 8, his cousins Tazel Miah, 10, and Monir Miah, 7, and their relative Ismail Hossain, 10, — had gone missing after they went out to play football on a ground nearby their house at Sundratiki village in the afternoon of February 12.
Their bodies were found buried under sands on the bank of Kamaichhara River near the village on February 17.
Police officials claimed that Secondary School Certificate examinee Rubel Miah, 17, son of Abdul Ali of Sundratiki village on Friday confessed to the killing of the four boys.
Habiganj superintendent of police Joydev Bhadra said that Arzu Miah and Basir Uddin, arrested on February 18, were also produced before judicial magistrate’s court on Friday evening for the recording of their statements, but they declined.
‘Later, the police sought them to be remanded in custody for 10 days for interrogation and the court posted for Monday the hearing in the police application,’ Joydev said.
He said that the killing of the four schoolboys took place following enmity between their guardians and the suspects.
He claimed that Rubel admitted that his father Abdul Ali had ordered the killing of the four kids after kidnapping them and six people including Rubel and his elder brother Jewel participated in the killing.
Joydev mentioned that they seized a spade, a shovel, several sacks and a blood-soaked shirt from the house of Arzu as evidences of the killing.
