UP elections: AL, BNP ask units to send recommendations by Feb 15

Both the ruling Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party have asked the field level units of the respective parties to send their recommendations for party chairman candidates by February 15 to the central office.
BNP in a press release signed by its joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir on Saturday stated that the party’s district unit presidents and general secretaries have been asked to collect the names of UP chairman candidates recommended by the party’s concerned grassroots units and have them sent to the party central office seven days before submission of nomination papers.
According to election schedule of UP polls, the last date for submission of nomination papers for the first phase of the polls is February 22. The first phase will be held on March 22.
The Awami League on Friday asked the selection boards at the grassroots to select a single party candidate for each of the union parishads and send the names to the party chief’s Dhanmondi office by February 15.
The BNP’s press release directed the local leaders to send correctly spelled full names of the recommended candidates along with their voter ID number.
BNP has decided that the party’s upazila unit president and general secretary and union unit president, general secretary and organising secretary – a total of five people – will jointly recommend the party’s UP chairman candidate, the press release said.
In case of convening committees, the upazila BNP convenor, member-secretary or number one joint convenor, union unit convening committee convenor, member secretary and number-1 joint convenor – a total of five people – will jointly recommend the party’s candidate, the press release said.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is likely to be authorised to authenticate the party’s UP chairman candidates.
Following the decision of the Awami League’s central nomination board meeting on January 19, the grassroots units have formed a six-member selection board comprising the presidents and general secretaries of the district, upazila and union parishad unit in each of the districts to select party candidates for the UP polls.
The union parishad unit of Awami League will recommend the name of a single candidate to the selection board through an extended meeting with the leaders at the ward level.
The selection board will finalise the name of single candidate for each of the UP and send the names with their details to the party’s nomination board for approval and nomination.
The Election Commission on Thursday announced the schedule to 4,275 union parishads, out of 4,544 in the country, following which aspirant candidates began desperately lobbying the senior party candidates to secure the party ticket for contesting the polls.
The UP elections will be held in six phases with the first phase on March 22 in 752 union parishads of Sylhet, Sirajganj, Satkhira, Sherpur, Lakshmipur, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Munshiganj, Madaripur, Bhola, Barisal, Barguna, Brahmanbaria, Bagerhat, Bogra, Patuakhali, Panchagarh, Pirojpur, Pabna, Narsingdi, Noakhali, Netrakona, Dinajpur, Dhaka, Jessore, Tangail, Jhenaidah, Jhalakati, Jamalpur, Chuadanga, Chittagong, Gopalganj, Khulna, Kushtia, Comilla, Kishoreganj and Cox’s Bazar districts.
