Railway communications among Dhaka, Khulna and other northern districts resumed after more than eight hours of suspension following derailment of a passenger train in Chatmohar station area of Pabna Friday afternoon.
The rail communications resumed around 11:00pm after five coaches of the Dhaka-bound Drutajan Express from Dinajpur were fixed on the tracks, said Sirajganj rail department’s senior deputy-assistant engineer Md Ashraf Uddin.
Drutajan Express, along with two other intercity trains — Ekata Express on Dhaka-Dinajpur route and Nilsagar Express on Dhaka-Syedpur route — that had been stuck at Bhangura and Sharatnagar stations respectively, left for respective destinations later, railway officials said.
Earlier, five compartments of the Drutajan Express derailed about 2:30pm halting rail communication among Dhaka and Khulna and northern areas including Rajshahi and Dinajpur.
The accident took place when the equaliser bean of a carriage broke, said Ashraf Uddin.
A rescue train from Paksey reached Chatmohar to salvage the train in the evening.
Hundreds of passengers in these trains and different stations suffered due to disruption in the schedule.
