BNP amends constitution for election of senior vice chairman

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday amended its constitution to include the election to the position of the senior vice-chairman, alongside that of the chairperson, ahead of the party’s upcoming national council set for March 19.
Tarique Rahman, son of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, was made the senior vice chairman during the party’s fifth national council in 2009.
At a standing committee meeting Wednesday night at Khaleda’s Gulshan office, the chairperson amended the party’s constitution following recommendations of the standing committee.
A three-member election commission headed by standing committee member Jamiruddin Sircar was formed for conducting elections to the two top posts.
A preparatory committee and 15 sub-committees were formed to make the national council a ‘success’.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a news briefing at the party’s central office on Thursday informed newsmen about the amendment and council preparatory committee and sub-committees.
The briefing followed Wednesday’s meeting of the standing committee, the party’s highest policymaking body.
Fakhrul said the standing committee meeting attendees ‘unanimously’ asked the party chairperson to bring necessary amendments to the party’s constitution for election to the position of the party’s senior vice-chairman, along with the party chairperson. The party constitution has given her (the party chairperson) that authority, he said.
As per recommendation of the standing committee, the BNP chairperson approved the necessary amendment to section 19 ‘Ka’ of the party’s constitution, he said.
Fakhrul said an election commission was formed at the meeting as per the amended constitution for conducting the election of the chairperson and senior vice-chairman with standing committee member Jamiruddin Sircar as chairman, vice-chairman Harun Al Rashid as member and executive committee member M Aminul Huq as member secretary.
He said the election commission will set the election schedule and take other relevant steps in appropriate time.
He said a national council preparatory committee with Khaleda Zia as chairperson, and some sub-committees, were formed to make the council a success.
The convenors of the sub-committee would be the members of the preparatory committee.
The subcommittee convenors are – reception sub-committee convenor BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir,  manifesto and constitution amendment sub-committee convenor standing committee member Tariqul Islam,  discipline and service sub-committee convenor standing committee member ASM Hannan Shah, management and publicity sub-committee convenor standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, drafting sub-committee convenor standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan,  international relation sub-committee convenor senior journalist Shafik Rehman, publication sub-committee convenor vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman, medical treatment and aide sub-committee convenor BNP chairperson’s advisory council member AZM Zahid Hossain, office and communication sub-committee convenor joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and cultural sub-committee convenor cultural affairs secretary Gazi Mazharul Anwar.
In reply to a question, he said the national council would be held on March 19 and that they had applied at three places to secure venues for the council and was yet to receive full confirmation.
He expressed hope that ‘within couple of days’ they would receive confirmation.
He said the standing committee meeting attendees condemned and protested at the sedition case against Khaleda Zia for being a ‘deep conspiracy’ to eliminate politics from the country. He they demanded immediate withdrawal of all false cases, including the sedition case against Khaleda Zia.
BNP leaders Nazrul Islam Khan, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Fazlul Huq Milon, Abdus Salam, Khairul Kabir Khokon and Abdus Salam Azad, were also present.
