Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha has finalised sites for three new housing projects at the outskirts of the capital in a bid to ensure planned urbanisation and to meet the growing demand of plots and flats.
RAJUK officials said that they had a plan to construct two new housing projects at Basila area near the Mohammadpur residential area and at a location near Jhilmil housing project area.
‘But we have scrapped our plan to construct a new housing project near Jhilmil mainly for scarcity of suitable land,’ said RAJUK chairman G M Jainal Abedin Bhuiya.
He told New Age that they had selected a site of 2,000 acres of land near Purbachal New Town project for a new housing project, besides selecting a site of 2,018 acres of land at Basila area in Keraniganj for another housing project.
Jainal said they had also selected a site of 500 acres of land beside Dhaka-Narayanganj road, which was proposed by Narayanganj deputy commissioner, for another new housing project of RAJUK.
He said RAJUK will start the process for acquisition of land for the new housing projects.
Narayanganj DC Md Anisur Rahman Mia told New Age that he had proposed the housing project near the national stadium beside Dhaka-Narayanganj highway aiming to ensure planned use of land and initiate planned urbanisation in Narayanganj.
‘In my proposal I have given emphasis on allocating the plots and flats to the existing owners of the land after developing the housing project, instead of giving plots and flats to outsiders,’ he said.
Narayanganj DC, however, said RAJUK would finally decide on how to allocate plots and flats at the new housing project.
RAJUK officials said that the housing project at Basila in Narayanganj had been undertaken mainly to facilitate the members of the current parliament and government high-officials with plots and flats.
They said they had already prepared a proposal for the acquisition of the land of Basila area to send it to the land ministry’s central land allocation committee for approval.
A senior RAJUK official said that the housing project near Purbachal New Town project area will be developed on the land at Joar Shahara, Dumni and parts of their nearby mouzas in Dhaka.
MPs of both ruling and opposition parties had been demanding plots or flats in the capital since the first session of the current parliament.
In a meeting of the ruling party on May 5, the Awami League standing committee members raised the demand again.
Housing and public works minister told the meeting that the ministry was considering taking up a new housing project for meeting the demand for houses of those MPs who did not have houses in the capital.
