A police probe body on Tuesday recommended departmental action against five cops suspended and withdrawn from Shah Ali police station following the death of tea vendor Babul Matubbar.
Babul received burn injuries as he was pulled down to his burning kerosene stove at Gudaraghat under the police station in the city on February 3. He succumbed to the injury at Dhaka Medical College burn unit on February 4.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Mirpur division Masud Ahmed, who led the probe team, submitted the probe report to the deputy commissioner’s office, said deputy commissioner Mirpur division Qayumuzzaman Khan.
The report recommended departmental action against former Shah Ali police station officer-in-charge Shahin Mondal, withdrawn on February 5, and sub-inspectors Mominur Rahman and Niazuddin Molla, assistant sub-inspector Debendra Nath and constable Jasim Uddin, who were suspended on February 4, said a police officer.
Qayumuzzaman Khan said that the report would be submitted to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner who would decide the next course of action.
As the five cops were suspended and withdrawn already, they might now face termination, he added.
The four suspended cops were accused of negligence in discharging their duty as they did not rescued the tea vendor after the incident and were involved in ‘unprofessional activities’ in the area, a police official said referring to the probe report, adding that Shahin Mondal, was accused of failure to perform his duty properly.
The probe report claimed that the probe found no direct involvement of the five cops in the incident.
It held police informant Delowar Hossain responsible for the incident.
Earlier, another investigation committee formed by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police headquarters, submitted its report to the DMP commissioner on Sunday accusing the five cops of negligence in discharging their duty.
