A Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation vessel, along with 200 passengers on board, got stuck on a shoal due to dense fog at Kauarchar near the Barishal River Port early Sunday.
The vessel, PS Mahsud, that plies the Dhaka-Morelganj route, left Dhaka for Chandpur, Barisal, Jhalakathi, Hularhut and Morelganj on Saturday at 6:30pm.
Syed Abul Kalam Azad, assistant general manager of BIWTC Barisal station, said the vessel was carrying around 200 passengers and got stuck on the shoal while taking a turn to anchor at Barisal River port around 5:30am.
No casualty was reported in the incident, BIWTC officials said.
Salvage operation would start soon, the officials added.
The passengers, however, blamed the vessel’s captain Idris Hosen Siraji as he let the second master Shahjahan Hawladar run the steamer amid the dense fog.
