Police members are not above law: IGP

Inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Islam on Saturday said in Sylhet police members were not above the law and they never showed any sympathy to the police personnel who broke rules.
‘If any police member engages in major criminal offence, criminal case must be recorded against him,’ he said.
Stating that the police department would not take responsibility of any personal offence, Shahidul said, adding that the allegation must be proved in investigation.
‘The police department follows its rule. If the crime is proved in investigation against any of our members, we never hesitate to sack him,’ he claimed.
The IGP was responding to questions of journalists after addressing a seminar styled ‘Role of administration in ensuring rights of the expatriate persons’ at noon.
Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh arranged the seminar at District Council auditorium in the city.
Sylhet district and session court judge Monir Ahmad Patwary, metropolitan session court judge akbar Hossain Mridha and public prosecutor Misbah Uddin Siraj, among others, addressed the programme, with HRPB president Manjil Morshid in the chair.
