JU bird fair held

Bird lovers from across the country thronged Jahangirnagar University campus to watch birds in festive mood on Friday.
Jahangirnagar University zoology department organised the 14th bird fair in association with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Arannayk Foundation, Prokriti O Jibon Foundation and JU Wild-life Rescue Centre with a view to creating awareness of bird conservation.
JU vice-chancellor Professor Farzana Islam inaugurated the function at Mohua Chattar in front of New Arts building around 10:30am, while Prakriti O Jiban Foundation chairman Mukit Mozumder Babu, IUCN coordinator of Bangladesh, Hasib Irfahan Ullah, and president of Birds club Neaj Abdur Rahman addressed the inauguration session.
The programme was presided over by zoology department Professor Monwar Hossain and co-ordinated by Professor ATM Atiquir Rahman of history department.
A book titled ‘Jahangirnagar University Campus’ by Professor Sazeda Begum of zoology department was unwrapped in the programme.
‘Jahangirnagar University is full of biodiversity, people started loving birds because of the combined efforts of the government, media and Jahangirnagar University,’ JU vice-chancellor Professor Farzana Islam said.
Mukit Mozumder Babu said, ‘Birds are not for beauty only, rather its contribution to ecosystem and our existence to be evaluated properly.’
Bird’s fair convener associate Professor Kamrul Hasan said, ‘We arranged the fair for the conservation of birds and raising awareness among the people of the country.’
‘I am very excited to see many new species of birds,’ Abid Hossian, a class five student of Zirabo Cantonment Public School and College, said.
Meanwhile, a drawing competition, a quiz competition, a bird literature exhibition, and a display of different preserved species of birds were also held during the day long fair.
