A fire broke out at the basement of Central Hospital in the capital’s Green Road on Thursday, leaving the services suspended for a couple of hours.
Deputy assistant director of fire service and civil defence Mamun Mahmud told New Age that the fire originated from the basement of the hospital building around 1:30pm. A total of seven units of fire trucks doused the flame after one and half hours.
The patients, doctors, and other medical staff were evacuated safely, the hospital authorities said.
Some 150 patients were undergoing treatments when the fire broke out at the ten-storey hospital, officials said. The critically ill patients were moved to nearby hospitals, they added.
Meanwhile, relatives of the patients locked in a brief scuffle with the hospital authorities as they were barred from reaching their patients after the fire. The service was suspended for the day as the electricity supply was snapped due to the fire.
Many patients were seen leaving the hospital fearing further trouble. The parents of a toddler were seen leaving the hospital after the incident.
His uncle Sabuj Mia told New Age that they hurriedly came out of the hospital as the fire broke out.
‘We are leaving now with clearance as the authorities said the services will be off today,’ Sabuj said.
The fire service official said they are suspecting that the fire might have been originated from an electric short circuit.
But Khalilur Rahman, an administrative officer of the hospital, said the fire was caused
by a gas cylinder explosion of a car parked at the basement.
The electric lines were replaced by 8:00pm.
