A sub-inspector of Barisal Metropolitan Police was suspended on Wednesday over allegation of harassing two businessmen and extorting money from them on Monday last.
The suspended policeman is sub-inspector Rehanuddin of Barisal Airport police station.
He was suspended after police in a primary investigation found his involvement in extortion, said Abu Sayeed, assistant commissioner and spokesman of Barisal Metropolitan Police.
He said Moksedur Rahman, a businessman of the city, filed a written complaint on Tuesday against SI Rehan to the BMP authorities.
Then the BMP formed a one-member probe committee led by Azadur Rahman, assistant commissioner of BMP, closing SI Rehan to the police lines.
The complainant said in his statement that he along with his business partner Salauddin went to take dinner at Allardan Hotel in Nathullabad bus terminal area of the city around 9:00pm on Monday.
SI Rehanuddin went there driving his motorcycle, physically assaulted the two friends labeling them as drug peddlers and brought them behind the adjacent Dhanshiri Hotel.
He demanded Tk 50,000 to free them from the charge.
Denying the allegation, the victims expressed their inability to fulfill SI Rehan’s demand on the spot.
Then the SI took Tk 11,000 from Moksedur and released them around 11:00pm on Monday after the businessmen promised him to pay the rest amount as soon as possible, the complainant said.
Acknowledging the news, Luthfar Rahman Mandal, BMP commissioner, said the punitive action against the SI was taken after the probe committee submitted its report on Wednesday noon which observed that the allegation against SI Rehanuddin was primarily found as true.
