The state minister for post and telecommunications, Tarana Halim, prosecuted Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote general secretary Arun Sarkar Rana on Sunday night accusing him of collecting large amount of money forging her signature and using her name and office.
Tarana is also the president of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, a cultural organisation backed by the ruling Awami League.
Tarana’s assistant personal secretary Joydev Nandy filed the case on her behalf with Shahbagh police station, confirmed police station officer-in-charge Abu Bakar Siddique.
He said that the police launched investigation into the matter and they would arrest Arun if a prima facie case of forgery was found.
The first information report said that Arun collected money on several occasions in 2014, 2015 and 2016 using letterhead of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote and Tarana’s name and office and forging her signature.
Without mentioning any figure, the complaint stated that Arun collected a large amount of money in the form of advertisement and sponsorship from different institutions and organisations in the name of different programmes deceiving them.
It said that recently Arun sent letters to the managing director of Teletalk, the state-run mobile company under Tarana’s ministry, seeking advertisement or sponsorship for holding programmes marking Jail Killing Day and Victory Day and Home Coming Day of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
When contacted, Arun denied the allegation.
He said that it was aimed to drive out him from the organisation.
He said that some people might have forged his and Tarana’s signatures as part of the conspiracy to oust him from the organisation.
