A daylong Nobanno Utshab, festival to celebrate the harvesting of new rice, was held in Sylhet on Friday.
The state minister for finance and planning MA Mannan, as chief guest, inaugurated the festival at the playground of Police Line High School at Rikabibazar in the city in the morning.
Sylhet Woman Chamber of Commerce and Industry arranged the Nobanno Utshab to encourage the local women to involve themselves with different businesses and invest their capital in various productive sectors.
Addressing the inaugural function, the state minister said the incumbent government is sincere to empower the women in the society as its prime minister herself is a woman.
He urged the SWCCI authorities to take effective steps for empowering the women in the society and gave assurance of providing necessary support of the government in this regard.
Lawmaker Amatul Kibria Keya Chowdhury, Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Salahuddin Ali Ahmed and Sylhet Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice-president Hasin Ahmad addressed the programme as special guests with SCCI president Swarna Lata Roy in the chair.
