10 members of Barisal Metropolitan Police have been awarded punishments after being found guilty by investigators of forming a ‘bribe-fund’ allegedly to bribe officials for their promotions.
Those policemen’s promotions and increments have been withheld for up to three years, according to Md. Habibur Rahman, a deputy commissioner of BMP.
He told local journalists that 10 police personnel which included three assistant sub inspectors, a Nayek, and six constables of BMP, were found involved in forming the illegitimate bribe-fund more than 6 months ago.
However, allegation against one was still under investigation.
Habibur did not provide detail information but said on Saturday that the decisions were made by police headquarters last week.
The guilty law enforcers are: Anisuzzaman, Monir Hossain, Md. Hanif, Kobir Hossain, and Rafiqul Islam. Their increments and promotions have been ordered suspended for three years.
Similar punishments have been awarded for two years each to Shohidul Islam, Bablu Jamaddar, Dolon Baral, Abbas Uddin, Arifur Rahman and Tapas Kumar Mandal.
However, a departmental investigation and trial against accused Zillur Rahman, the then deputy commissioner north of BMP, was still running, Habibur said.
Some 230 constables started contributing to the fund, after succeeding in promotion exams; it was learnt by New Age.
Depending on the ranks those police members were supposed to be promoted to, an amount of Tk 30,000 to Tk 50,000 was set for each for collections, sources said.
More than Tk one crore was accumulated in the ‘bribe-fund’ in a joint bank account of a multinational bank’s Barisal branch.
As the matter was unearthed, the security cell of the police headquarters started investigation on June 17, 2015.
The 10 accused were suspended first from June 29 through July 4, 2015, for the sake of fair investigation.
