Slum fire kills one, burns down 80 shanties in Chittagong

A man was burned to death as some 80 shanties gutted in a fire that broke out at a slum in Miakhannagar Balur Math area of Bakulia thana in Chittagong city early Monday, United News of Bangladesh reports.
The deceased was identified as Nur Mohammad, 55, a resident of Beribadh area of Dhaka.
Duty officer of Agrabad fire service control room, Prohollad Singh said the fire originated from a burning mosquito coil at a shanty around 12:45am and soon engulfed other shanties.
He said Nur was burned alive as he could not come out of his shanty.
On information, six fire-fighting units rushed in and doused the blaze around 3:50am.
The extent of losses caused by the fire was said to be around Tk 5 lakh.
