As Bangladesh celebrates the 45th Independence Day on March 26, New Age Youth asked members of the young generation the basic difference between the two historic days for the nation – March 26 and December 16. We sought their take about the two days and how ingrained the history is among our youth. While some interviewees got the answers right, some stammered and repeated the words only. Independence was declared on the Independence Day and our liberation war mainly began on that day. On the other hand, the Pakistanis surrendered on the victory day and we earned our complete freedom.

On the Independence Day, i.e. on March 26, we took the initiative to liberate our country and on the victory day, our initiative for freedom succeeded. That’s pretty much it.

Independence Day and Victory Day are two significant national holidays of our country. Independence Day, which is on March 26, is the day when Bangladesh declared itself an independent from Pakistan. The people of East Pakistan could no longer tolerate the West Pakistan’s injustice through central governance. After that day, they fought in the liberation war for nine months and then Pakistan finally gave up.

Independence Day is when we earned independence and on victory day, maybe, well, our country gained complete freedom.
Tasneem Tabassum (20) A levels student
On Independence Day, our country became independent and on Victory Day, we became independent officially. Apart from this, I can’t really say much as I don’t know anything else.
Md Jonayet Hossain (18)

On March 26, through the declaration of Bangabandhu, our war of independence began. After fighting for nine long months, Bangladeshis earned victory on December 16. Hence, Independence Day merely reminds us the day we started the war and the Victory Day is when we earned freedom.

On Victory Day, we earned a victory whereas we earned independence after fighting for a long time since the Victory Day. We earned independence on March 26 for the entire country. Since that day, the People’s Republic of Bangladesh is formed.

We declared the identity of an independent country on the Independence Day; the fact that we are a separate entity and instead of East Pakistan, we would be called as Bangladesh. But, on Victory Day, after a nine-month long war of liberation, we earned our victory against the Pakistanis and also our freedom.
